I don't know that I'd normally mention this, but if you've already been on digitalprairieenterprises.com, you might notice a few minor changes. You might not, we didn't change anything big, but that means if you do notice, it's likely to be a little jarring.
Really, we just moved from a static GitHub Pages website to a dynamic website. That did mean rearranging some CSS and having to make some compromises, though. If you're one of those folks who pays really close attention to the URL in your browser, you'll probably notice it says 'www.digitalprairieenterprises.com' now, instead of just 'digitalprairieenterprises.com'. That was one of the changes we had to make to get everything to work.
The big deal was the static page made any sort of updates hard. The homestead is really growing here at Digital Prairie, with this blog, new products, and so on. Any time I changed something, I had to redeploy the whole site, which was just a pain. Now, for the things that should get regular updates - the products and this blog - I can just upload a couple of files and you see the results.
It's not really very exciting, but it was a burr under my saddle, and I wanted to get it cleaned up.
I could have just made the change and moved on. Maybe I should have. But a big part of Digital Prairie's commitment is a commitment to openness and transparency where we can be open and transparent. We're highly mission motivated here on the homestead, and that mission is more about our community and employees than it is about profit, but it can't not be about profit. That's how you stop helping employees altogether.
That means we won't be able to be open and transparent about everything. This is just common business - we'll have proprietary information, secrets, and so on that we can't share. But I'm a big believer in show don't tell when it comes to honesty and character. I'm hoping that by being open and honest about these sorts of things - and bigger ones when I can, of course - you'll be able to know you can trust me when I do have to say "I can't share that."
